Pizza, Pizza!

At the first annual Homeschoolers Pizza Cook-off, I'm proud to say that the Chopins took home the award for most creative pizza. Mom came up with the idea of a S'mores pizza. So we created "Chopin Campfire Pizza".It is a regular Jiiffy pizza crust (in hindsight, it probably would have been better with some kind of graham cracker crust) topped with marshmallow creme for the "sauce". Then we topped it with crushed graham crackers, pieces of Hershey's milk chocolate bars and mini-marshmallows. After we pulled it out of the oven we topped it with some chocolate syrup. Can you say "diabetic coma"? But it was pretty great. Props to Mom for her great ideas!

The other pizzas were incredible! They were all uniquely made and tasted fantastic! It was great to see families working together to have fun. Thanks to the Thomas family for hosting such a wonderful get together. Here are some pics from the event...

Do the Robot!

After months and months of begging and pleading, the kids finally got a chance to work on a project they've been waiting to use their scientific minds for--building a tin can robot! Gus got a "build-a-tin-can-robot kit" as a present a while back and we waited for a free afternoon to build it. The kids worked dilligently on building it. They learned about wiring, batteries, screws, nut, bolts, axles and motors. And Dad got to brush up on his skills, too. Once it was finished, it was time to hit the switch..........nothing! Not to panic. We went to the wiring first and figgled with it. We hit the switch again......and their "frankenstein" came to life! The kids were amazed as their little tin-can robot (yet to have a name, but the favorites are "R7" and "Seven Up") glided across the living room floor. They were amazed at what the robot could do, but we were more amazed at what they could do. They accomplished it! Now I think their plans are to build C3PO. Good luck with that!

Bourre?...Boo-yeah!

Today we spent most of the day at GiGi's. We were served a fantastic lunch and ate until buttons burst. It was great!

Dad just recently taught Gus a card game--bourre. Dad said he remembered his parents having card night and they would always play nickel bourre. He said he had fond memories of the excitement of card night because there was always a lot of energy in the house--a lot of raucous laughter! GiGi, in an effort to recapture that fun, decided to have a bourre afternoon. We played for a good few hours, and what do you know, we recaptured the fun. We laughed and laughed. Everyone, even those who weren't playing, kept us laughing. We look forward to the next bourre afternoon at GiGi's. If for nothing else, laughter should be in the cards!

Everybody's Working for the Weekend!

The forecast called for a 60% chance of rain. We knew we didn't have much time so we raced to get the yard manicured. We couldn't have done it without the help of a few big helpers. Thanks Gus and Beedle for working so hard in the yard today!

God Bless Leo!

Today Leo Burton Mader was baptized. We were fortunate to be there to witness the church welcome its newest member. After the celebration, a reception was held at the Maders, where all the kids got to play while the adults visited. Mom and Dad spent a lot of time sniffing Leo's head--we are fascinated with the smell of chrism oil--like a moth to a flame! Welcome to the Church, Leo!

Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Pray for Us!

Today is the feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. To celebrate, Mom did what she does best--she made something creative and good to eat! She made a scapular cake. Mom always does a great job of making very important events and celebrations fun and tasty!

It's Sew Easy!

Mom and Gus have been working on a cross-stitching project. They have been stitching several saints. Mom traces out the saints and they take turns stitching them. This is a great project for both of them and they are doing a tremendous job. May their efforts be blessed!

Horsin' Around

Today we went to Grandma Dee and Poppa's house for a relaxing Sunday. We were treated to a great meal (as usual) and enjoyed a good visit. But the main attraction was the equine addition to the Ardoin stables. Uncle AJ bought four horses, two pregnant mothers and two babies, and will soon have six. The kids were tickled to finally see the horses. They got a chance to get up close and personal with them and even pet and brush them. Here are a few pics from the day...

Happy Birthday America!

Happy Birthday America! We celebrated our freedom today by enjoying the freedom of a day at the planetarium. We met up with the Landreneaus and the Pagans who were also celebrating their freedom at the planetarium. They participated in several exhibits. They learned about clouds and tornadoes. They learned about the effects of water and sediment. They spent a lot of time in a forensics lab. They learned about the skeleton and how to use a microscope to see small particles. But the attraction that kept calling for their attention was the Star Wars Lego exhibit. There they re-enacted all of their favorite Star Wars moments. It seems like all nine kids in attendance were fanatics. Our final stop was in the planetarium for the Star Show. Inside, the kids got to see the summer nighttime sky. They learned about meteors, asterisms and constellations. For the dads, it was hard to stay awake in there. We're kind of like parakeets--if you turn off the lights, we'll eventually fall asleep. Dad enjoyed his nap.

We said goodbye to our friends to make it home for lunch. We got some rest and then prepared for classic 4th of July food--BBQ! While Dad fired up the pit, the kids spent some time in the sprinkler. Nice to do on a triple-digit temperatured day!
Before supper, we had a little ceremony in front of the flag to honor our nation's birthday. We prayed that God would continue to bless and protect our nation. We next showed honor to our nation by saying the pledge and singing our national anthem. We were proud of the kids for being so participatory.

After wolfing down the BBQ, we sang "Happy Birthday to U...S...A! (written by Gus and played on the piano by him). The kids put up birthday cards and coloring sheets to honor our nation. Then Gus and Mom unveiled their dessert masterpiece--A USA Fruit Tart. It looked incredible and tasted even better. Kudos to them for their hard work!

After showers and prayers, we winded down and headed to bed. Tonight it was with a little bit more appreciation for what we have and what has been given to us. We realize how fortunate we are to have freedom and to be able to celebrate it. Happy 4th of July!
